The Comilla Amli Court-1 has issued arrest warrants against former Member of Parliament for Comilla-6 (Sadar) constituency, Bahuddin Bahar, and his daughter, former Comilla City Corporation (CUSC) mayor, Tahsin Bahar Suchana, in connection with the murder case of Advocate Abul Kalam Azad.

On Wednesday (September 17) afternoon, Senior Judicial Magistrate Nishat Jahan Chowdhury of Comilla Amli Court-1 issued the warrants.

The investigating officer of the case, Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohinul Islam, submitted a charge sheet on Wednesday, mentioning the involvement of 35 individuals in the lawyer’s killing. The court accepted the charge sheet and issued arrest warrants against 16 fugitives.

Among the 16 accused are former MP Bahar, former mayor Tahsin Bahar, Comilla Metropolitan Awami League’s General Secretary Atique Ullah Khokon, former councilor Syed Raihan Ahmed, and Ishtiaq Sarkar.

Regarding the matter, Kotwali Model Police Station OC Mohinul Islam said, “The court has accepted the charge sheet against 35 accused including former MP Bahar and former mayor Suchana. At the same time, the judge, Nishat Jahan Chowdhury, has issued arrest warrants against the fugitives. Police operations are ongoing to arrest them.”

It is to be noted that on August 5, 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government, Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum leader and Comilla Bar member Advocate Abul Kalam Azad was shot while returning home in the Mogoltuli area of Comilla city after joining a victory procession in Kandirpar. He later died while undergoing treatment.

Following the incident, a case was filed by his colleague Jasim Uddin against former MP Bahar and several others, naming some and including 20 to 25 unidentified individuals.
