Iraq’s influential Shiite leader, Muqtada al-Sadr, called off the protests and ordered supporters to leave the capital Baghdad’s Green Zone. Al-Sadr said in a televised address on Tuesday, “Our party is disciplined and loyal.” You must move out of the Parliament building within one hour.
He also said, this is not a revolution. Because it has lost its peaceful character.
Al-Sadr apologizes to the people of Iraq for the violence. About 30 people were killed in the violence. Hundreds more were injured.
Earlier, when the influential Shiite leader announced his retirement from politics, supporters started protesting. Meanwhile, the protesters started moving away soon after he gave the order.
Meanwhile, the curfew across the country imposed from 7 am local time on Monday has been withdrawn, the army said.
Iraqi caretaker prime minister Mustafa al-Qadimi welcomed al-Sadr’s order to his supporters to end the protests.
In addition, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Iraq (UNAMI) welcomed al-Sadr’s order for supporters to leave the Green Zone.
