Gotabaya Rajapaksa, the former president of Sri Lanka, who fled the country in the face of intense protests by the people, has applied for a green card in the United States. He wants to live there permanently with his wife and son.

Sri Lanka-based media The Daily Mirror reported this information on Thursday.

According to the Daily Mirror, Gotabaya is waiting for the completion of all procedures to obtain a green card in the United States. He wants to live there with his wife and son. Gotabaya, however, was living there as a US citizen after retiring from the military. Gotabaya later revoked his US citizenship after his elder brother Mahinda Rajapakse came to power in 2005. Then Mahinda Rajapaksa joined the government.

Currently, Gotabaya’s wife is a US citizen. Mainly because of his wife, Gotabaya can get permission for green card.

Rajapaksa’s lawyers in the United States have started working on his green card application process since last month.

Gotabaya is currently staying with his wife in Bangkok, Thailand. Initially, he planned to stay there till November. But after canceling it, he will return to his country on August 25.

The country’s new cabinet will soon meet to provide the former president with a house with security and other facilities as per Sri Lankan law.
