Three hardcore militants were killed in a fierce encounter with Indian security forces in the Shopian district of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Army has confirmed that the operation is still active, as intelligence suggests the possible presence of at least one more militant in the dense forested region of Shoikal Keller.
The encounter is part of a broader counter-terrorism campaign, codenamed “Operation Killer,” aimed at eliminating militancy and separatist elements from the region. The operation initially began in Kulgam district and later expanded to Shopian following actionable intelligence.
Joint patrol teams comprising the Indian Army’s Rashtriya Rifles, paramilitary forces, and local police launched a coordinated assault in the area. The gunfight lasted for nearly two hours, resulting in the deaths of three militants, according to official sources.
In a social media post on X, the Indian Army stated that the militants opened fire on the security forces, who retaliated with heavy force and “neutralized” the threat. Civilians in the vicinity were safely evacuated as the area was cordoned off for the operation.
This incident comes shortly after India launched “Operation Sindoor,” a high-impact military campaign targeting Pakistan-backed militants. The operation was triggered by the brutal killing of 26 civilians in Pahalgam, allegedly carried out by cross-border terrorists.
In retaliation, the Indian Air Force conducted precise airstrikes deep into Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), targeting and destroying several militant infrastructures. According to Indian military officials, the strikes dealt a severe blow to terror operations originating from across the border.
In a national address delivered on Monday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi stated, “Operation Sindoor marks a new chapter in India’s fight against terrorism. Any attack on Indian soil will be treated as an act of war and responded to accordingly.”
He further added, “India will not tolerate nuclear blackmail. Countries that harbor terrorists will face direct consequences. The world has seen the true face of Pakistan. The participation of Pakistani army officials in the funerals of slain militants is proof of state support to terrorism.”
On May 7, the Indian Air Force launched precision strikes across the Line of Control (LoC), targeting militant hideouts. In response, Pakistan initiated retaliatory shelling and drone attacks along the border, resulting in civilian casualties on both sides.
Despite India’s robust air defense systems intercepting most of the incoming threats, reports suggest minor damages in some regions. India’s counter-response led to significant destruction of multiple Pakistani military installations, according to defense insiders.
On May 10, both nations agreed to a temporary ceasefire. However, the Indian Army clarified that its forces remain on high alert along the border and are prepared to retaliate immediately to any fresh provocations.
The ongoing conflict in Jammu and Kashmir highlights the fragile peace in the region and the increasing intensity of India’s counter-terrorism strategy. Operations like “Killer” and “Sindoor” signal a shift in India’s military posture, underlining its resolve to strike back at any cross-border threats. As both nations walk a tightrope between retaliation and diplomacy, the global community closely watches, hoping the temporary ceasefire holds and long-term peace can be achieved.
