Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has flown to Bangkok, Thailand, for urgent eye surgery. He departed from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka at 2:45 AM on Tuesday night aboard a Thai Airways flight. His wife, Rahat Ara Begum, is accompanying him on the medical trip.

According to BNP media cell member Shairul Kabir Khan, Mirza Fakhrul will undergo surgery on his retina at Rutnin Eye Hospital in Bangkok. The decision for immediate travel was made after doctors at United Hospital in Gulshan, Dhaka, recommended urgent treatment following a recent eye-related health concern.

On Monday, Mirza Fakhrul was taken to United Hospital due to increasing complications in his vision. After an evaluation, specialists advised immediate retinal surgery which prompted the travel plans to Thailand. The Rutnin Eye Hospital is renowned for its advanced ophthalmology services and was selected based on the doctors’ advice.

This is not the first time this year that Mirza Fakhrul has traveled abroad for medical purposes. On April 6, 2024, he also traveled to Singapore with his wife for health check-ups and treatment. Sources within the BNP confirm that the party leader has been dealing with several health issues in recent months and has been undergoing treatment both at home and abroad.

BNP party leaders and supporters have expressed concern over the health condition of Mirza Fakhrul. Many of them have conveyed their prayers and well-wishes for his successful surgery and speedy recovery. Social media has also seen a wave of messages from party activists hoping for his safe return.

Mirza Fakhrul’s absence from the country at this critical juncture may impact BNP’s ongoing organizational activities. As one of the key decision-makers in the party, his temporary unavailability could delay important political decisions. However, party insiders suggest that he is staying in close contact with senior leadership to continue oversight remotely as much as possible.

Mirza Fakhrul’s decision to seek treatment in Bangkok is part of a growing trend of medical tourism among South Asian politicians and elites. Bangkok’s hospitals, particularly Rutnin Eye Hospital, are known for their specialized care and international standard facilities, attracting patients from across the region.

As of now, BNP has not disclosed the expected return date of Mirza Fakhrul. Party officials have stated that the duration of his stay will depend on the outcomes of the surgery and post-operative recovery process. Further updates will be shared based on medical developments in Bangkok.

Mirza Fakhrul is one of the most prominent figures in Bangladesh’s opposition political landscape. As the Secretary General of the BNP, he plays a pivotal role in coordinating party activities and strategies. He has been a consistent voice against the ruling Awami League, advocating for electoral reforms, press freedom, and democratic rights.

Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir’s urgent trip to Bangkok underscores the severity of his eye condition and the importance of specialized medical treatment. As he undergoes surgery, the nation and his party supporters await his speedy recovery and safe return. The BNP leadership continues to monitor the situation closely while extending their full support during this critical time.
