The cabinet has directed the energy department to present the rationale and detailed explanation for the hike in fuel oil prices. The order was given in an unscheduled discussion at the cabinet meeting on Thursday.

A cabinet meeting was held under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on this day. The Prime Minister attended the meeting virtually from Gana Bhavan. The ministers attended the meeting from the Cabinet Division at the Secretariat.

After that, Cabinet Secretary Khandkar Anwarul Islam announced the decision of the meeting in a press conference at the Secretariat.

When asked whether there was any discussion about the price of fuel oil in the meeting, the Cabinet Secretary said, the Energy Ministry and the Chairman of BPC (Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation) have already given details in the press. It was notified in the cabinet today.

He also said that they have given a detailed explanation about these, and will explain again in the meantime. Since this is a technical matter, the Ministry of Energy has been asked to give a detailed explanation on the matter. The briefing they did should be repeated. It is also said that this should be done every few days.

Before this, last Friday night, the government announced an increase in fuel oil prices. In this, the price of diesel has been increased by Tk 34 per litre, the price of octane by Tk 46 per liter and the price of petrol by Tk 44 per litre.

Due to the sudden increase in the price of fuel oil, it is affecting various sectors including transportation. According to the government, in line with the increase in the price of fuel oil in the international market, the price of fuel oil has been adjusted to reduce the losses of Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC).
