Foreign Secretary Masood Bin Momen expects Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed to attend the United Nations Chiefs of Police Conference in the United States, ‘if there are no difficulties’. Can Benazir Ahmed go to this conference in New York despite the US ban? When asked, he said this.
The foreign secretary said, let’s see, we hope the IGP can attend the conference. And if there is a problem, we will definitely try to know it in advance. He said this to reporters after a meeting with the US Assistant Secretary for International Organization Affairs Michelle J. Sison, who is visiting Dhaka, at the Foreign Service Academy in the capital on Monday.
On December 10 last year, the US government imposed sanctions on seven current and former RAB officials for human rights violations. Benazir Ahmed, former director general of RAB and current police chief, is among the banned officials.
A conference of police chiefs is going to be held at the United Nations headquarters from August 31 to September 1. A delegation of six members of Bangladesh led by Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan is scheduled to participate in the conference. The IGP is also in the delegation.
Whether there is a United Nations agreement with the United States or not, where someone can attend the United Nations events despite the ban, the Foreign Secretary said, there is such a convention. But in the past we have seen exceptions to this rule in some cases. It’s hard to tell until it happens.
Has the government received any green signal about the IGP going to New York? In response to this, Masud bin Momen said, “We have not communicated about it yet.” I will communicate about it in the coming days.
He said since the JIO (Government Order) has been done, the IGP has plans to go.
Last Thursday, Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs. According to the official order signed by Harun-Or Rashid, the delegation will leave Dhaka for New York on or around August 30 and they will leave New York for Dhaka on or around September 3.
