Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has commented that there has been an extreme violation of human rights during the military regime after the killing of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and his family. Sheikh Hasina said that the then army-backed government had issued an indemnity ordinance to stop the trial of that murder. Because of that ordinance they are barred from seeking justice. The then military government rehabilitated Bangabandhu’s murderers and war criminals into politics.

During the meeting, two-time former president of Chile, Michelle Bachelet, said that her family had to suffer the same inhuman torture when the ‘tyrannical’ government was in power in her country. The UN High Commissioner said that he was deeply moved by visiting the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at 32 Dhanmondi.

In the meeting, the Prime Minister and the United Nations High Commissioner discussed various problems of the current world. They agreed that the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the Russia-Ukraine war, sanctions and counter-sanctions have created a global crisis. On the Rohingya issue, the Prime Minister said, Myanmar does not deny that the Rohingya are its citizens. But they are yet to respond to the repatriation of their displaced citizens.

The Prime Minister said, Myanmar should take back their citizens. Bangladesh never wants war with anyone. Sheikh Hasina said that 62 thousand refugees have returned to Bangladesh after the Chittagong Hill Tracts Peace Agreement and 1 thousand 800 armed cadres have surrendered.

Bachelet urged Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to create education and employment opportunities for Rohingyas in Cox’s Bazar. The Prime Minister replied that they can arrange that opportunity for the Rohingyas in Bhasanchar.

The UN High Commissioner said the UN is working with the Ministry of Law on the Digital Security Act and has made some observations. Stating that she knows the matter, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh will not allow anyone to use its soil for terrorism. He briefly highlighted the steps taken by the government for the overall development of the country.

The Prime Minister said that the Padma Bridge is contributing to the development of the people of the southern part of the country.
